What happened in chapter 6 - chapter 10?:
Months after they first met, Emi and Sydney are celebrating the fact that Emi was chosen for a high profile internship with champagne and pizza when she finally admits to herself that she feels something for him. He opens up to her and tells her the truth about his feelings for Lynn in the past, but is firm that nothing ever happened, but Emi can’t help feeling a little jealous anyway.
Lynn suspects something is going on with Sydney and Emi, but he denies it, although he’s definitely attracted to her. He’s seeing a woman named Cheryl at the moment and Emi is on and off with her boyfriend, Darren.
Emi’s feelings of jealousy don’t go away when they get to La Jolla for a festival and anniversary celebration for the restaurant. Valerie and Lynn set Sydney up with someone named Lucy, and Emi just hates it. She hates seeing him interact with Cristina, Mando’s widow. At least Sydney ended up hating Lucy, who was obsessive.
Not long after they get back from La Jolla, Emi tells Sydney she dumped Darren for good this time. But a few months later, Emi starts seeing one of her brother’s high profile team mates, Sly Sabian.
“A part of her was so tempted to walk all the way in, sit with him, and chat as she knew they could easily do for hours. But another part of her, the one that was making her so confused lately, didn’t trust herself to not want to do something inappropriate. Like touch him.”
Are you surprised with how cool Emi’s brothers are being about her spending so much time with Sydney?
No regrets. Just lessons learned.
Having lived through the torment of losing his first love to someone else--all because he never spoke up--Sydney Maricopa vowed never to repeat that mistake again. So when he finally admits he's fallen for his new best friend, he refuses to lose her too, especially once he realizes his feelings for her might be requited. There's only one problem.
Her perfect boyfriend.
Still, Sydney's determined to fight for the girl he loves this time. He has what it takes to go up against Mr. Perfect. Most importantly, he and his new best friend have something even her boyfriend can't compete with--their profound connection. One he intends to use to win her over.
Until he finds out what she'd be giving up if she chooses Sydney.
Something no one should ever give up. Would he dream of selfishly asking her to? Or should he do the honorable thing and sacrifice his own happiness for hers? Allow the girl he loves to sail off into the sunset with another man as he stands back and watches in agony . . . again?

Holy crap, this book! It was not what I was expecting - at all. And I mean that in a good way. I have read many of the author's books and all have been enjoyable, but none of them tugged at my heart and made me give up everything else - eating, sleeping, whatever - so I could finish it. This is easily one of her best books and I am still reeling from it. At the start, it seems to be a sweet love story between two people who shouldn't be together because of their ages and the different points they are in their lives (he's ready to settle down with a family, she doesn't know what she wants to do with her life after college), but somehow find their way to each other. It's a slow progression from friends to lovers but when it happens - bam! It's fast, it's intense - and it's over before she knows it and for reasons that are stunning, but I won't give away. Can these two find their way back to true happiness? Well, you're just going to have to read for yourself to find out!
