EXCERPT:

London smiled, fully charmed by him. Honestly, she shouldn’t be because the last thing she needed in her life was another man who thought he knew what was best for her. Which was exactly why she should cut and run.
“I think I’ll go home now. Maybe we can have another fun discussion about opposites attracting another time.”
“You’re attracted to me.” It wasn’t a question.
She blushed, but she refused to let her embarrassment keep her quiet. “You’re good looking, fun to talk to, and you rescued me tonight without demanding anything in return. That’s the ultimate trifecta of qualities a man should have.”
“Any man?”
“Any man who is interested in getting to know me,” she clarified.
His blue on blue eyes flashed. “I’m more than interested in getting to know you.”

Excerpt:
Alex said, so quietly, “Play something for me.”
Her hands stretched over the keys, and she tried to push them down to play even a major chord, but as soon as a key neared the break point, just when the hammer inside the piano was poised to strike the string, something in her mind shouted Don’t! and she couldn’t press it.
Alex asked gently, “Does Flicka know you’re worse?”
“I don’t see how she would. We’ve been out of touch for a few years.”
“But she knows that you’ve got—” he paused, obviously considering whether to say the terrible words, “a problem with this.”
“She must have forgotten about it,” rather than that Flicka had decided to punish Georgie in a spectacularly cruel way.
Maybe Georgie deserved to try to face her fears, melt into an incoherent puddle on the floor, and have everyone from her childhood and current best friends laugh at her failure.
It would serve her right.
But she would never be able to walk as far as the piano in front of all those people, so Flicka couldn’t have her poetic justice.
“Anyway,” she said, “I can’t do it.”
“I can help you,” Alex said.
“And how could you do that? Hypnotize me? Doesn’t work. Psychoanalysis? There’s nothing there.”
“Of course not, but I don’t want you to play for them.” He leaned across the piano again, and his hair slid from behind his shoulder and hung, reflected in the black gloss of the piano’s lacquer. “I want you to play for me.”
Georgie stared down at her spidery hands hanging over the black and white piano keys. “I can’t.”
He walked around the piano and stood beside her, his slim hip right beside her cheek. A faint, masculine scent wafted from his clothes, a cologne, something soothing like green herbs. She was acutely aware that she could lean about six inches over and unzip his fly with her teeth.
Alex said, in a low, soft voice, “Play the middle C.”
She laid her thumb on the white key right in front of her waist and held it there, but she didn’t push down.
Alex stroked her arm from her elbow to her wrist with the back of his hand, soothing her. “Play it.”
She told her finger to push down, and she let the weight of her arm fall on her finger that was curled above the keys.
Her finger collapsed and wouldn’t press the key.
Alex shook his head, and his long hair swished over his shoulders. He turned his hand over so that his palm was on her wrist, and then he slid his hand over hers, covering her fingers on the keys with his own. Calluses on pads of his fingers were hard on the tops of her fingers.
He stepped behind her, still not moving his fingers over hers. Warmth from his body drifted out of his suit jacket that opened around them, spreading over her bare back, and his cologne filled her nose like she was walking in the fields around Tanglewood.
He leaned over her, stretching his arms on both sides of her, caging her.
His whisper brushed the skin on her neck. “I’m not forcing you to do something you don’t want to. I’m letting you have what you want most, what you crave, but you dare not admit, even to yourself.”
“I’m afraid,” Georgie admitted, her voice breathy from fear at pressing that note and from his body so close to hers.
“Everyone is, in the beginning,” he said. “It can be terrifying to have an experience so desired, so primal, that you lose yourself. You have to trust me to take you through the place that terrifies you, to keep you safe, and to hold you until you emerge on the other side.”
Georgie couldn’t seem to catch her breath or move away from him. “We’re still talking about the piano here?”
Alex chuckled.
“Just the piano,” she said, but she leaned back, almost imperceptibly, maybe an inch, so that his mouth was so near her skin that his breath was a hot circle on her bare shoulder, and the scent of champagne in his mouth rolled down her skin.
“Let me do it for you, first,” he whispered.
Georgie closed her eyes, and the weight of his finger forced hers down.
A single note, a C, rang out of the piano and jarred against her skin.

Excerpt:

I met him out in the rain, smiling under my vinyl hood, but trying not to seem overeager. Through the rain, the smoke from the tailgate blended together with the fog the evening rains brought on, and for a moment I pretended to stare at it, standing at the end of the driveway in case he was watching for me. And, when the passenger side door opened, I knew he was.

“Hey!” I tried shaking some of the rain from my jacket and slipped inside. Wearing a long-sleeve Henley with the sleeves rolled up, I noticed right away how the blue of his shirt made the stars on his arm pop. Instead of staring at them, I tried to focus instead at the gray beanie that made his messy hair look even messier.

“Hey yourself, Jumper.” He smiled and looked me up and down.

Frankly, I was surprised he hadn’t invited himself in and already made himself home. “How’s the car running?”

I smiled and leaned my head against the sear. “More like walking—or fast crawling, but it’s better than nothing.”

He nodded sympathetically.

“What are you doing here?” I stared off at the windshield and silently prayed for the word race to come out of his mouth. “I thought you had to work tonight.”

William stretched his arms out over the dash and sighed. “If it’s okay with you, I don’t want to talk about work.”

If he didn’t want to talk about his night job then it definitely must not have involved cars. Still, I honored his request and didn’t ask him about it further.

Though my eyes had adjusted to the dark, I blinked hard and focused in when I saw his right hand. A dirty, white rag had been wrapped around the base of his knuckles to the top of his wrist, and while it was dark and dingy, almost black after drying, the sight of blood was a distinct one I couldn’t ignore. Without even thinking about it, I reached for him the same way he had reached for me the night before. Like me, he gave the limb over willingly.

“Christ, what happened to your hand?”

“Work.” He shrugged. “That’s kind of why I wanted to see you.”

Reaching for the overhead light, I could see it was bad without even really seeing it. William flinched when I tried to move the makeshift wrap, but when I looked up to apologize he was smiling at me just enough to let me know he had just been joking.

“Because we almost match? You’ll need stitches for this. Do you have insurance? Are you a union member? I think there are some hospitals where you only have to give them your member number…”

He chuckled and slid his hand out from mine. For a second I was offended, but when he rubbed his eyes and shut off the overhead light, I realized he was probably just tired. Maybe not as tired as me, but tired regardless.

“I’m not worried about my hand, Jumper. I can take care of it at home just as easy, you know that.”

“What—how did you do that?” I nodded to his hand and put on my seatbelt. Though the likelihood of us going anywhere was less and less, I wanted to let him know that I was ready. “You didn’t hurt yourself on purpose, did you? Because I’m pretty sure I trademarked that last night.”

Chuckling, I couldn’t tell if he was entertained by my worry or my attempt at humor. Still, I laughed a little along with him. “No, Jumper, nothing like that. I was trying to, ah, get something open and I wasn’t paying attention, stabbed myself with a screwdriver.” He added the last part absent mindedly, as if his own flesh were irreverent. How he could feel that way about himself when he was clearly an important person frightened me. If William thought someone as wonderful as him didn’t matter, what possible chance could I have? I shook my head and glared at him.

“What was so distracting that you felt the need to stab yourself?”
William stopped laughing then, and looked at me with an intensity I had only seen him give the road. “You.”

Taken aback, I looked away, unable to take his stare when it was so unrelenting. “What?”

“All day long I’ve been thinking about what you did yesterday, what you told me.” He closed his eyes and gripped the wheel. “What you didn’t…”

“I’m sorry.” I told him honestly. “I wouldn’t have—if I had known you were going to feel so bad about me hurting myself, I wouldn’t have done it. But you don’t have to feel bad for me, William.” I swallowed hard and looked away as new pangs of guilt rose in my stomach. “I know you do, but you don’t have to. You aren’t responsible for me, you don’t owe me anything—”

“But you owe me something, right?” The smile was back in his voice, instantly breaking the tension between us. While a respectable girl might have, maybe should have, been offended, the offhanded remark was more flirtatious than dangerous. I, therefore, did not think twice about the fact that we were outside, alone and in the dark.

“Excuse me?”

“Don’t worry, Jumper, I’d never ask you to do anything if I didn’t think it wasn’t kosher.”

Though it was dark, I looked away, unsure whether or not he could see me blush. “Says the Catholic.”

“Seriously, did you mean what you said earlier about owing me a favor?”

I shrugged. “I guess.”

“Good.” He smiled. “Then instead of thinking about talking to somebody, I want you to do it.”

“You’re kidding?”

“They have hotlines you can call, shrinks who work for free, I know a priest who is a pretty good listener—”

“Why does this matter to you so much?”

“You mean why do you matter to me?”

“Yeah.” I gulped. “I guess.”

“I—” Smiling, he shook his head. “It’s complicated. But let’s just say I get a rush out of you, Jumper, and I don’t want you to go away anytime soon.”

“Anytime soon?”

“Yeah.” He laughed. “Are you going to argue with me about that too?”

Instead of saying anything, I rested my head against the cool glass. During the steadier streams of rain, the pitter-patter would echo in my eardrums, undermining the headache that threatened me from too much caffeine and a lack of sleep. I closed my eyes and inhaled the combined scents of William and the rain.

“No, not tonight,” I said eventually. “But no guarantees about later.”
When I opened my eyes again, he was smiling.

Excerpt  from Runaway:

Courtney does her best to hide her face as she remembers seeing this guy once before.
He got out of a car that followed her partially one day as she was looking for a job.

Braxton! She pushes her face deeper into the blanket and quickly realizes this was the
worst thing she could do, as the old musty smell pushes itself up her nostrils....“Who is
this?”

“Oh, you know. Another one of those runaways.”

“I don’t understand why we have to do this.”

“It’s not your job to understand. It’s your job to understand what your job is, so we can
make sure this job gets done.”

“Yea, but kidnapping young kids.” He stops, looking at the girl on her stomach, huddled
in the corner of her cage. “Look at her. She didn’t ask for this.”

“We didn’t ask you to share your emotions. This is our job. I get paid when I get money
from her family. Therefore, it’s gonna happen!”

Courtney’s blood is boiling with his remarks. She tries hard to bite her tongue, but she
can’t. Spinning around her hair flowing with her head continuing around wrapping her
face. “You won’t get anything out of my family! They are poor!” Her face is full of fury,
and her teeth are showing as she growls with each breath in. “I have no other family.”

“Bella?”

Courtney looks at Braxton, their eyes meeting again. Dread fills her veins as he
searches her eyes. A cosmos separates the two of them with passion building, but
Courtney doesn’t understand any of it as tears fill her eyes.

Braxton turns, walking out of the room, snarling at the man who freed Courtney of her
restraints earlier, “Let her go. That’s an order. I’ll answer to my father.”.........

~*~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~*~
S.M. Knowles was born in Elmira, New York where she was swept away in a whirlwind to the Land of Oz—Independence, Kansas. Her parents were relocating for working opportunities and decided that this would be the perfect place to start new roots. Little did she know that this place would contribute to the inspiration for the first book she wrote in her Rylee Everley Series.

While growing up, S.M. would travel the roads around her house while imagining she was somewhere else. Her imagination would take her everywhere, making the long hot summer days seem shorter throughout her fantasies.

At the age of twelve, she decided to write her first book. Filled mostly with dialog, she filled up one-hundred pages, front and back. After taking the book downstairs to show her mom, and persuading her to buy her more paper, she excitedly ran back to her room. As she barreled through the door, S.M. tripped over items left on her floor, and her papers came raining down in her room. Discouraged, she stood there in tears, picking up her papers and throwing them in the trash. Her work had no organization, no numbers on her pages, just a child fulfilling a joy that she would put down and not pick up again.

When she became older, she joined the military for something different. In that time, she was able to explore many places and even met her husband in Iraq. After coming home, she started her family in Arizona and went back to school, earning a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Training.
