Guest Post – Going Indie by L.A.
Remenicky
The decision to
put my writing out there for the world to see was not an easy one. I never
thought I would actually write a book until I was introduced to NaNoWriMo in
2012 by a friend. I signed up even though I really had no idea what I was doing
and I thought there was little chance that I would actually succeed. On a
borrowed laptop, my journey began as I started typing the story I saw in my
head.
When NaNoWriMo
was over I had over 50,000 words written and I decided to keep going and start
editing. Let me tell you, editing a NaNo book is not for the faint of heart,
it’s hard work. I found some beta readers and received some good comments so I
kept going; more editing and the search began for a cover and the perfect
title. Most would have gone the traditional publishing route, sending off query
letters and waiting for their big break.
Me, I decided to
jump in with both feet and publish Saving Cassie myself. I found a premade
cover, found an editor willing to do a free “final edit”, and I started
researching how to publish on Amazon. I told myself it was because I didn’t
want to give a publisher a percentage of my royalties but to be brutally
honest, I was scared to send my book off and have them tell me it wasn’t any
good. If my book didn’t sell I could say I just didn’t have the marketing
skills to get it noticed or I didn’t have the money to buy the right advertising.
Well, Saving
Cassie sold a few copies and received some good reviews (and some not so good
reviews) so I kept writing. It’s as if writing that first book opened up
something in my head. Story ideas pop into my head all the time; I’ve even
started carrying a notebook with me at all times as I never know when
inspiration will strike. I guess “going indie” was the right decision for me.
Now, I’m just trying to get my books noticed.
My second novel,
Invisible, was released on January 31.This time I paid for a full edit and I am
so glad that I did. Invisible is so much better and I learned a lot from my
editor. Writing really is a journey. My goal is that each book will be better
than the last.
The moral of my
story is: find the way that works for you. Whether it’s writing, painting, or
whatever – don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. This proud indie
author says “Go for it!”
