What do a hotshot lawyer and a moonlighting beauty have in common? Not much, but when they have to put their differences aside for a good cause—anything can happen. Maybe even love.

Victoria Fairfax wasn’t looking for love. Instead, she was hoping to earn enough money to start her own catering business by working nights as a bartender for charity events. However, love might have been looking for her when Jack Turner, a handsome guest, comes to her rescue after a man harasses her on the job.

Jack seems like the perfect guy—a successful young lawyer at one of the biggest law firms in the city with charm to spare. The only problem is Victoria’s deep-seated hatred for lawyers. Despite her growing feelings for Jack, she can’t bear to get too close to him in case he turns out to be just as rotten as the lawyers from her past. As Jack falls more and more for Victoria, he realizes that his relationship is more complicated than he could ever imagine, and he faces a difficult choice—to choose between the well-being of one of his clients or his growing feelings for Victoria.

Will they unravel the tangled web of their past and present and heal after a lifetime of pain? Or allow their past to keep them apart?

Excerpt

“Why aren’t you dressed?” I said, holding out my hand up to his chest.
“Because I was hot. Am I making you feel uncomfortable?” He flashed a knowing smile.
“No.” You sure are.
“I think I have a fever.”
He walked closer and my hand went to his forehead, which felt cold to the touch.
“You seem okay,” I said as our eyes met.
His hand goes to my waist, and I knew that look he was giving me.
“If I didn’t know any better, I would say you’re trying to kiss me.” I arched a brow.
“I am.” He smiled wickedly, waiting for me to move forward, but I forced myself to step back instead.
“Not a chance, McAdams,” I said, walking away from him.
“Not that I’m not happy to see you … but why are you here?”
“I wanted to check out where you lived,” I mused. “To see if your place was bigger than mine.”
“Aha! That’s the Staci I know.” His crooked grin came out full force. “But, um … not to see if I’m okay?”
I turned around to find him now stretched out on his white couch, his hair resting on top of his closed eyes. I had the urge to allow my hand to wander through his soft strands of hair and grip them tight … only without malice.
Keep it together, Staci. This is Greg, the man you despise.
Only it didn’t feel like that anymore. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to come over. It wasn’t until now I realized how much more enthralled I was with Greg. It was an attraction and nothing else. Perfectly reasonable when you worked in close proximity with someone.
“Yeah. Whatever. That, too,” I said, and Greg chuckled.
“Do you mind if I bring this into the kitchen?” I hold up the restaurant bag. “I brought you chicken soup. Want some?”
“Only if you will feed it to me.” He smiled, and I had the urge to roll my eyes at him.
“Not a chance, McAdams.”

When the universe conveys a message, you listen.
Olivia Montiano just caught her fiancé cheating. Now she is forced to question what she wants out of life and love. She’s not his type. But the universe has other ideas. Nick has a secret he’s keeping from her, afraid it will bring their new relationship to a sudden halt.
Will they figure out what the universe holds for them?

EXCERPT:

“Well, that’s a shame.”
“A shame for whom?” She laughed.
“For you.”
“Look, you seem like a nice guy, but technically I’m still in a relationship.”
“Yeah, apparently with someone who’s not right for you,” he added. “I think we’re meant to be more than just two ships passing in the night.”
“Hmmm…might I remind you your ship is actually sinking…”
“Really?”
“Pretty much since we began this conversation—oh, look at that! Your ship is completely underwater.”
He laughed. “That bad?”
She nodded her head slowly. “I’m afraid so.”
“But you never know. I might be the one you’re looking for.” His eyes twinkled with amusement.
She was taken aback. “I…I’m not looking for anyone. The only reason I’m here tonight was to get away from someone.”
“Right, and here you are…you found me instead. You can’t deny it’s not serendipity.”
“Serendipity?” Olivia repeated.
“Look, I believe you walked into this bar tonight, not by chance, and I was meant to talk to you. When you’re not looking for something and find something extraordinary, that’s serendipity.” He motioned with his hand in the air like it was some magic trick.
She observed in silence, wondering if this sort of crap worked with other women.
“You think you’re something extraordinary?”
“No, not me…us,” he replied.
Olivia laughed. “Do girls fall for this kind of stuff?”
“I wouldn’t know,” he replied honestly and let out a long breath. “All right look, we got off on the wrong foot. Can we call it a truce?”
Olivia bit her lip. She hated to admit it, but she was kind of having fun. Well, maybe just a little. He did manage to get her to forget her problems at least for the moment.
“Nick Montgomery.” He encouraged her by holding out his hand.
She hesitated before taking it. “Olivia…Montiano.”
“Olivia Montiano? Is that your real name?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” Her brows tangled together.
“You’re not one of those girls who like to toy with men. Give them a fake name and number?”
“Do I look like the kind of girl who would do such a thing?”
He amusingly narrowed his eyes at her.
“Okay.” She laughed. “Yes, Olivia is my name. I was named after Olivia Hussey.”
“No way!”
She caught sarcasm and narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you familiar with Olivia Hussey?”
“Yeah, sure. Everyone knows who Olivia Hussey is…okay, not really.”
“She’s an actress, obviously one of my mother’s favorites.”
He shrugged. “Anyhow, it’s a lovely name.”

EXCERPT:

“I think it’s safe to say it would be safer for you if you took your bike to work.”
He winked at her.
“Ha, funny.” She looks at the people who gathered around; some were locals, and some were tourists. What she enjoyed the most was the view of downtown Montreal.
Nick waited for her to get settled on the steps of the Chalet du Mont Royal before handing her back a vanilla ice-cream cone.
“Wasn’t that fun?”
“Yes, it was. But I don’t know how I’m going to get back. My legs are so tired.”
“What’s the rush?”
Olivia shrugged and smiled at him.
“Is there somewhere you have to be?”
“Do you?” She acted nonchalant, not wanting to give Nick the satisfaction that she was easily available.
He smiled appreciatively. “Great, we both have nowhere to be. So there’s no rush.”
He glanced down and frowned. “You better start working on that ice cream before it drips.”
Olivia licked her ice cream, making more of a mess of herself. She laughed, and Nick handed her more napkins to help her clean off her sweater.
“You know what else I haven’t done in ages?” She looked up at Nick, who sat one step above her.
“What’s that?”
“Ping pong.”
He made a funny face like she said something revolting.
“Come on, who doesn’t like ping pong?”
“Just to let you know, I’m silently judging you.”
Olivia glanced at his gray polo shirt with happy faces scattered all over it.
“Don’t you dare be judging me, Montgomery. Where did you find this lame top?” She playfully ran her hand across his chest, feeling him stiffen under her touch. His smile slowly faded and out of nowhere, there was a particular affliction overshadowing his face.
“Don’t worry, Montgomery, my hands are clean.” She put her hand up to show him.
“No, it’s not that.” His voice had become heavier. “There something I’ve wanted to tell you.” Something in his tone caused for concern. Then she thought maybe he didn’t want things to go back to the way they were. Maybe he realized during their time apart that he’d rather be just friends. Or worse … there was someone else. She was afraid of what he was about to say. Whatever it was, it wasn’t good. She could feel the presence of it, this thick air hovering above them. Olivia didn’t know if it was the ice cream or this familiar feeling of complete disappointment because the tugging in her stomach began to grow.
Aware of his stare, she glanced up to find his eyes on her, and for a moment Olivia wished he would kiss her to make it all go away.
