Blurb

As a child, I trusted no one.
Then I found my best friends.
They gave me a family and saved me from a life of abuse that still has me messed up.

Then one of those best friends captured my heart.
Lincoln, tough yet tender, a walking contradiction.
He loves me too—flaws and all.
He’s the most patient man on the earth and understands my PTSD.

What he doesn’t understand is why our being intimate makes me feel “dirty”.
He’s not one of the men who abused me and he’d never hurt me. I know this. I believe it.
Still, the “dirty” creeps in even though I know what we do together is anything but.

He’s here now and he’s going to stay.
It’s time for me to talk to someone professionally.
I need to shed my unhealthy past in order to have a healthy future with the man I love.
If I don’t, I just might lose the best thing that’s ever happened to me—and there’s not enough therapy in the world to get me through that.

I’m hopeful for a world with more
love, acceptance, and compassion for others.

LINCOLN
“Uncle Linc?” Kadi prompts.
“Yeah, darlin’?”
“You remember the day I wanted to ask you a question, but you had to go training with Jabber Jaws?”
I laugh out loud. Best nickname ever. Jabs is gonna never live this one down.
“I remember.”
“Can I ask them now?”
“Sure. Do you want to go in another room?”
Kadi tilts her head, considering. “No. I think here is okay.”
She takes a seat across from me at the breakfast table. The table is no more than a very long picnic table with long moveable benches.
“Ask away, Tiny Dancer.”
She smiles at that. The kid’s barely seven and she dances like a pro.
“The other day, I saw you and Uncle Ethan kissing.” She quickly turns to her dad, Jace, and says, “I swear I wasn’t spying.”
Jace nods an okay and, holy fuck, just what has that girl seen? More than a few of us shift uncomfortably.
“Mommy Summer says you’re only supposed kiss like that if you love someone a whole lot.”
Oh hell.
“Do you love Uncle Ethan a whole lot?”
Well, fuck me sideways. Except for Ethan choking on a bite of waffle, not a sound can be heard. We haven’t even had much of a discussion. I pat him on the back, so he doesn’t choke. We just got used to saying, “I love you”. It’s not awkward or weird. Why would it be? We’ve been in love with each other for years, though we didn’t say it much until I moved here. I don’t know why.
Maybe just in case we’d never be together.
I run a hand over my face and chuckle. “Nothing like putting your Uncle Linc on the spot, huh?”
She just stares at me. Waiting for an answer.
“Of course I love Ethan a whole lot.”
“Like, love like you love Jesse or love-love like Daddy loves Summer?”
I give Jace a glance and he’s over there grinning like the tool he is. I point at him. He’s just been put on notice.
“Definitely love-love,” I tell her, looking at Ethan and giving him a wink. He’s next to me nervous as fuck, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. I hope the wink set him at ease. He hates being in the spotlight.
“So… how does that work? Can two boys get married?” she asks.
“Lord have mercy on my soul, this kid,” I mumble as I drop my forehead to the table and roll it back and forth.
She pushes my head up with her tiny hands, pulling my skin and hair back. Jace laughs out loud and Summer coughs to cover hers. The rest of the family, well, they’re trying not to be loud, but I can hear them laughing.
I sit up and look down the table at them. “At least Summer had the decency to try to hide her laugh. Fuckers.”
Kadi looks at me with dollar signs in her eyes, and I point at her.
“No way, kid. That’s a freebie. You’re asking me some pretty hard questions here. I get some freebies,” I tell her.
She shrugs. “But you didn’t answer.”
“Yes, two men can get married. They just adjusted the law a few years ago,” I tell her.
She climbs up onto the table top and sits cross-legged in front of me. Just staring. I don’t want to know what’s coming next. This kid kinda scares me.
“If you love Ethan a whole lot and he loves you a whole lot, why aren’t you married?” Kadi asks with a smile.
Ethan spits his juice out and it hits Jace in the face. Serves the fucker right for letting his girl keep on like she is.
“Aren’t you just full of questions today,” Lucy asks with a snicker.
Kadi nods, but it wasn’t even a question. She’s the one who has all the questions.
“Kadi, we just haven’t talked about getting married yet.”
“Well, why not if you’re in love? Weddings are romantic. I could be your Best Girl—you know, instead of a best man.”
I can’t help but laugh. She’s relentless. “When the time comes, Tiny Dancer, you’ll be my Best Girl. I promise.”
Ethan’s still choking on the juice he swallowed wrong at the word “married” so I pat him on the back.
Who can blame him? I’ve been keeping things to myself, keeping him at a distance, and he really has no clue how I feel about things, about the future. For that matter, neither do I. Looks like we’ll have to have a talk later.
Kadi looks at me with a twinkle in her eye.
“What about babies?”
“Fuck this. I’m outta here,” I mutter, getting up and leaving the kitchen. I hear everyone laughing behind me. I turn and meet Ethan’s gaze. He’s smirking in that sexy way he does, and I smile back.
“That’s a freebie, Kadi,” he tells her, and I send him a wink before I head to the gym.
Holy fucking hell. Everyone’s worried about Kiki aka the She-Devil. Not me. Hell no. I’m more worried about Kadi the Inquisitor. That kid. She’s going to be the death of me. I know it.

ETHAN
I MET LINCOLN RAMIREZ on the playground at recess. We were eight. He was bigger than everyone else back then. He still is today—much bigger.
Watching him in the ring as he fights his opponent, I’m both terrified and turned on.
Linc’s back muscles ripple with each movement. Punch, jab, kick. Jesus, he’s beautiful. Every movement fluid, every connection to his opponent jarring. He fucks like that too. And that is what has me aroused, half-hard at a fight where my boyfriend is beating the hell out of his opponent. It’s impossible for the bloodshed to deter my cock from getting harder when Linc’s grunts of exertion remind me of when we’re in bed.
“Damn, that had to hurt,” Kennedy shouts beside me.
Sometimes, but in the best ways.
“His fists are bigger than my head!” Lucy exaggerates.
You should see his dick. I smirk at the thought.
“He’s kicking that fucker’s ass!” Jesse shouts, then lets out a cheer.
Fucking… ass… yes, please.
I wince when Linc gets a leg to the midsection. He doesn’t even flinch. He grabs the guy’s ankle and twists. His opponent falls to the floor, his expression one of agony.
Xander yells. “That kick would’ve had me puking up my guts.”
“All of us,” I reply.
“No lie. Just look at him. He’s a fucking beast!”
I look at Xander and think, “You have no idea.” But I say nothing. My gaze immediately goes back to the fighters in the ring. Just in time, too. Linc’s got the guy in some kind of submission hold, still with the ankle.
“Fucking hell,” I murmur.
“He’s gonna tap out!” Ben shouts. “He’s gonna tap!”
“Linc won’t like it,” Jesse replies. “He likes to knock the fuckers out.”
“It’s a win,” Kennedy replies. “He’ll take it.”
I nod. “He’ll take it, but he won’t call it a win.”
Just as Jesse predicted, the fucker taps out.
They announce Linc as the winner, he twirls once, arms outstretched, but when he stops, his eyes land on me and never move. Not while he’s being interviewed. Not while the cameras are going off. Not while they put his robe back over his shoulders.
Those eyes are going to be on me all night.
I shiver thinking of all the ways he’ll take me, and I’ll take him.
It’s going to be a long night.
I can’t wait.

Summer
Oh crap.  I knew this was going to go badly when I was assigned this case. It's not like I had a choice. When the boss from hell tells you you're taking this case, you take it. Hell, you jump at it. Which is exactly what I did—Jace Warner or no Jace Warner.
Then the boss man threw in the real reason why. Cold filled my body. I hated getting any special treatment because of who I am. I tried to stop that from happening. I even went so far as to change my last name my mother's maiden name. Somehow everyone always finds out. Then I either get treated like royalty or shit—in this case I think it's a bit of both.
Kennedy Caldwell. Holy crap. He is fine. His jeans loose and well-worn hug his thighs and ass with perfect definition. And that tight white tee he has on. I feel the need to fan myself—and this is before I step out of the cool air conditioned mansion and into the hot California sun.
Kennedy looks at me with a smirk when Jace asks what I'm doing here and I can't hide the blush that creeps up my neck to my cheeks.
"She's from DCFS, man," Kennedy relays and just like that Jace's warm and inviting demeanor turns hard as steel.
"You're a social worker?" he asks with disbelief.
I nearly snort. What? Social workers can't have a weekend-long romp in a rockstar's bed?
"I am," I tell him with more confidence than I'm feeling.
"That sure didn't take long, did it?" he sneers, walking over to the beautiful girl playing in the pool.
"I was assigned the case this morning," I tell him awkwardly when he makes no move to step out of the pool. "This would go much easier if we could sit down somewhere and discuss—"
His eyes flash annoyance. "Nuh-uh. You came here unannounced. You came here and interrupted my time with my daughter, so, I'm sorry honey, you're gonna wait until I'm damn good and ready to give you the time of day."
"Daddy, you sweared," the water bug scolds. Just that fast bad boy rocker Jace Warner's whole demeanor melts. It's captivating. It's so sweet. It's sexy as hell.
He smiles at her. "I'm sorry, pumpkin. I forgot for a minute."
She nods, her long, wet ponytail slapping against her back as she does. "S'okay. Mommy forgets sometimes too."
All the air gets sucked from my lungs as I see grief, anger, and determination flit across Jace's features. The last is the Jace I know. The first two I'm positive I'll be getting more than a glimpse of soon.
"I need to go potty, daddy," Kadence announces, already paddling her way to the stairs of the large pool.
"I can take her," Kennedy says, startling me. I forgot he was standing there, and from the way he's looking at me, he saw more than he should have. His brows furrow as I straighten my spine and lift my chin, hardening myself to the social worker I promised myself I'd be.
"I'll go with Uncle Ken-Ken," Kadence mutters as Kennedy wraps her in a large towel, drying her body and removing the floaties.
Jace leans down and kisses Kadence on the top of her head. "Thanks, man."
Kennedy nods.
Watching them love and care so tenderly for this little girl, I swear my ovaries are about to explode. Then--holy crap—Jace steps out of the pool in nothing but a pair of board shorts. His body exactly as I remember. Long, lean, muscled... The man is ripped! That V that goes down... I remember licking chocolate sauce off his chest. I'm starting to sweat and it's not from the California sun.
Get it together, Summer. Professional. You are a professional. You can do this.
Jace takes a seat in one of the chairs tucked beneath a patio table. He waves a hand for me to sit. "May as well get this over with."
I take a seat in the chair that's shaded by the open umbrella over the table, setting my folder and briefcase on the table.
"Look, Mr. Warner—" I begin, only to have Jace cut me off.
Stares into my eyes. “I’ve been inside you, Summer—more than once. You had my cock down your throat. I ate your pussy for breakfast. Let’s just keep it to Jace, yeah?,” he mutters, more than a little annoyed.
My face flames and moisture pools between my thighs at the memory. Oh man, he was so good with that tongue, his fingers—and that gloriously endowed cock. I press my legs together and work hard not to squirm in my chair. Damn him.

Blurb

She used to be perky, fun, and full of life—everything I hated about girls and their bullshit exterior. People called her bubbly; I called her “fake-as-hell.”

The edgy, dark, lonely girl in front of me was not the Olivia Brennan I knew from high school—far from it, actually. I knew the story—the whole town knew the story, we witnessed it all. It happened in the blink of an eye and the girl we knew was gone.

But I refuse to watch it anymore—I can’t stand it. I’m going to fix it—fix her. It’s time I showed Olivia her way back…

Back to the girl she used to be.
