Chapter Reveal: Shameless by Michelle Horst

RHETT

Evie Cole. She’s the one person I can’t figure out.
People say they love you, but what they really mean is that they love how you make them feel about themselves, or what they can take from you.
I can’t leave her on the streets, so I make her a deal she can’t refuse. It buys me the time I need to figure out whether Evie is the real deal or just another gold-digger.
The day Evie graduates, she breaks all contact with me, which proves that she was only in it for the money.
At least, that’s what I think, until random payments are made to my bank account.

EVIE

Rhett Daniels. My hero, who saved me from a life on the street. My unrequited love, who will sleep with every girl but me.
His playful smile and humorous façade might fool others, but not me. I see myself in his eyes.
He only has one rule.
He’ll pay for my education, giving me a chance to become independent. All I have to do is keep my clothes on which also means no dating.
I hate being his charity case, but I tell myself it will only be until I graduate. I will find a way to pay him back.
The worst part is that I fell in love with him.
Hoping to forget the one man I can never have, I move to the other side of the country. I’m determined to make it on my own, but things don’t always work out the way we want them to.

Rhett Daniels & Evie Cole ~ Book 5 in the Enemies To Lovers Series

This is book #5 in the Enemies To Lovers Series. Each book in the series is about a different couple. To get the full experience of their friendship, I'd recommend that you start with Heartless

EVIE

(Seventeen years old.)

Having done my chores for the day, I drag my tired body to the bedroom I share with Sandra and Wendy. Sandra will be back from work at three am, and Wendy is already fast asleep. Sandra is two weeks older than me and started working last week when she turned eighteen. She’s moving to Moonlight Ranch tomorrow.
Just thinking about what the future holds for me sends a shiver of disgust rippling through me. I only have one week left before I have to start working at that hellhole, as well.
Eric and Charlotte are cunning and deceitful. They’ve mastered the art of fooling welfare services whenever they come to do an inspection. The house is always neat, and they make sure that no business takes place on the premises. Everything happens at the ranch, and only at night. During the day it functions as just another cattle ranch. Most of the boys who come to live here are lucky as they get to work on the ranch during the day. Although, the attractive ones get handpicked by Charlotte to work at night alongside all the girls.
From the outside, everything looks normal. Eric and Charlotte regularly donate and are respected by the community. I’ve learned that money can buy a lot of things. Hell, they even had me fooled when I first came to live with them. I thought I was one of the lucky ones when I got placed with the Williams family. I was only thirteen and still held onto hope that I would find a family I could call my own.
Instead of a family, I found monsters who use us for cheap labor, and once you turn eighteen, you’re forced to become a sex worker.
Eric and Charlotte can sweet talk anyone into believing they’re saints. They’re smart, never letting their perverted clients touch any of the underage girls. But once we turn eighteen, all bets are off. You either start working for them, or you’re out on the cold street without a second thought. It still surprises me how many girls choose to stay.
Even though I’m tired, I can’t fall asleep. Since Sandra starting working, I’ve been spending my nights worrying about my eighteenth birthday.
I’m planning to run away. It’s all I can do to save myself from a life as a prostitute. I shudder with revulsion just thinking about some perverted old man touching me.
So far I’ve managed to hide some food behind the washing machine. Once I’m living on the street, I know the food won’t last long, but right now my biggest concern is where I’ll live. I’m scared to death of being homeless, but it’s nothing compared to the fear of having countless men use my body any way they want to for the rest of my life.
I have no other choice but to run away.
Feeling hopeless and terrified of what my future holds in store for me, I curl into a small bundle.

∞∞∞

Alienated. It’s the only word which describes how I feel. Unloved and disregarded by life, I wonder why I was born if I’m meant to be snubbed by everyone? People either look right through me or glare at me with disdain.
My first week on the streets I was too scared to even sleep. Every person that crossed my path was a potential threat. Up until a few weeks ago, being raped was my biggest fear. I was wrong. Loneliness has become my greatest fear by far. I was never close to any of the other children who were taken in by Eric and Charlotte, but at least I wasn’t alone while I lived there.
There’s not a single person who cares about me. I could disappear from the face of the planet, and no one would notice.
I might as well not exist. The realization is devastating. It’s been hitting me with one crippling blow after another when I least expect it. The thought will wake me minutes after I’ve drifted off, or slam into me while I’m walking down the street.
The only reminder I have that I’m alive is my aching stomach. I can’t remember the last decent meal I ate. The food I stole before I ran away was taken on my second day out here. I had hidden it behind a dumpster while I was looking for work. When I returned to the alley where I thought I’d be able to stay until I managed to find a job, two men were going through my things, dividing it all among themselves. They were much bigger than me, and fearing for my life, I had no choice but to leave with only the bag I had with me, and run.
Desperation shudders through me and for a moment I think about searching through the dumpsters near restaurants, but then I remember the beating I got when I accidentally trespassed on another homeless man’s area. That’s another thing I quickly learned. Deprivation makes savages of people. On the streets, you’ll be ripped apart if you so much as look at another person.
I hunch forward, hugging my arms around my waist as I try and fight off the chill. I tried to sneak into the library’s bathroom, but security caught me. I was thrown out with a harsh warning. It could’ve been worse. I was lucky they didn’t have me arrested. I also tried to walk up and down the aisles of shops that stayed open during the night, but it became unbearable. Seeing all that food and not being able to eat it was pure torture.
I’ve thought about going back to Eric and Charlotte, but when I think of what I’ll be going back to, I’d rather die. Being at the mercy of a pimp and his whore, I only had two options. Either I get busy spreading my legs to earn my keep, or I leave. I’ve always known that day was coming, but nothing prepared me for how dangerous it is living on the streets is.
I look up at the sign that reads Double D’s Cleaning Services. Saying a silent prayer, I open the door and walk into the reception area. If I don’t get a job soon, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’m reaching the point where I’m so desperate that I’ll even take a job as a stripper.

“Let me give you a ride home. You can’t walk in this weather,” Rhett says as I start to turn around.
I’m shaking my head before he’s even done talking. There’s no way that I can be alone in a car with him right now. I’m too embarrassed from knowing about the blowjob. The ride home will only be painfully awkward.
“I like walking in the rain,” I say, but my shivering from the cold doesn’t make me sound very convincing.
Time to make a run for it, Evie.
“See you around.” The words rush from me as I spin on my heel, walking away as quickly as I can without falling down again.
The next second, strong fingers wrap around my arm, and I’m whirled back around. I slam into Rhett but before I can recover from the shock, he bends down, presses his shoulder against my stomach, and then I’m airborne.
“What are you doing?” I shriek as my book bag tumbles to the ground. I’m too busy clinging to the soaked fabric on his back to try to stop my bag from landing on the pavement.
“It’s wet and fucking cold out here, woman” Rhett growls as he plucks my bag from the ground.
I try to wiggle my body out of his grip, but his arm tightens over the back of my thighs.
“Rhett!” I hiss through my teeth, dumbfounded by his caveman behavior. “Put me down.”
I place my hands flat on his back and feeling his hard muscles flexing beneath my palms, almost makes me forget that he has me upside down over his shoulder. I shake my head lightly to rid my traitorous mind of the foolish trance a few muscles has it ensnared in, and start to wiggle again.
A wet slap to my bottom makes my eyes widen, and my lips part as a tiny peep rushes from me.
Rhett just slapped me on the butt.
“You can’t walk home in this weather,” he says, calmly, as if this isn’t… crap, I don’t even have words for what this situation is. Nothing like this has happened to me before.
When I hear whistles and Rhett’s name being cheered from a nearby dorm, I pinch my eyes shut. My cheeks start to flame with embarrassment from other students witnessing this absolutely crazy moment.
I’m so thrown by what just happened that I remain speechless until we reach his car.
I hear my bag falling to the ground with a wet slap. Rhett moves his hands to my hips and pulls me down the front of his body. My breath whooshes from me as my feet meet the ground.
When I realize how close we’re standing to each other, I yank my hands back from where I was gripping his shoulders. The tight grip he has on my hips keeps me from moving further away, making my eyes dart up to his.
I should let him have a piece of my mind for tossing me over his shoulder, but my mouth dries up the instant our eyes meet. His eyes are so dark and intense that my stomach flutters with something I’d rather not name.
“Yo,” my mind snaps derisively, “don’t even think about going there. Get me out of the gutter.”
I open my mouth but still, nothing comes out. I must look like a gaping fish right now.
“He’s off limits, silly girl,” my mind adds her two cents as if I wasn’t aware of that glaring fact which keeps slapping me upside the head whenever I have a moment of weakness, and I dare think that Rhett is hot… and dark… and broody… and sexy … and damn I’m so screwed.
His eyes finally release mine, but then they travel down my body. Doing a leisurely sweep down to my shoes before coming back up, it feels as if his heated gaze is scorching every inch of my icy skin.
“It’s no use,” my mind sighs sullenly. “You’re definitely screwed. When this blows up in your face, don’t come crying that I didn’t warn you.”
When his eyes collide with mine, and his fingers tighten their grip on my hips, I realize why I was upset about what that girl said in the library.
I want Rhett to notice me. Not as a homeless girl he needs to take care off, but as a woman.
The thought is so jarring and unexpected that I rip my body free from his hold. I grab my bag and walk around the car to the passenger side.
Breathlessly I say, “Fine. If you want your car wet it’s your loss. Can we leave already? I need to get home.”
I yank the door open and climbing into the car, I swear I hear him muttering under his breath, “It’s not the only thing I want wet.”

MARCUS

I’m good at deceiving people. Too good.
I let people think I’m a bastard.
Then Willow walks into my life, and no matter how hard I try to scare her off, she keeps coming back.
But, everyone has their limit, and I’m afraid Willow has reached hers.
Why is it when you think you don't want someone they become the most important person in your life… but am I too late to show her how much I love her?

WILLOW

I tried so hard to fight for us. But some things can’t be saved.
They say if you really love someone you have to set them free. If the person comes back, they’re meant to be yours.
The only problem with that theory is even though he came back, he always left again.
How much heartache can one heart take?
How much rejection can one person take?
The man I love more than life itself has broken me.
That’s why I have to leave. That’s why I force myself into a new relationship.
But sometimes the devil you know is far safer than the devil you don’t know.

Blog Tour and Review: Careless by Michelle Horst

Available via Kindle Unlimited

Irony – when life f@cks you over.

Jax

She’s the one girl I can’t forget.
She’s as innocent as a saint, with the mouth of a sinner.
After taking her virginity, it’s taken me four years to get rid of the guilt.
I used her while she was at her lowest and she’s never forgiven me.
Watching my best friend die a little every day, and not being able to do anything about it, kills me.
I should’ve seen it coming. The second I hit rock bottom, she walks back into my life.
The f@cking irony?
She might be the only one who can save Marcus.
The life of the person who means the most to me lies in the palm of the girl I screwed.

Leigh

Hate is a strong word, but it’s one I’ve really considered when it comes to Jaxson West. But I’ve settled for intensely disliking him. It’s similar to the way I feel about visiting the dentist.
Asking me to forgive Jaxson, is like asking me to willingly sit through a root canal.
He’s heartbreakingly gorgeous, emphasis on heartbreakingly.
He’s an amazing friend, just not to me.
He’s supportive, understanding, caring and loving, just not to me.
No, for me he reserves his dark scowls and low growls.
I’ll do everything I can to save Marcus, but I’m not doing it for Jaxson.

Jaxson West & Leigh Baxter ~ Book 3 in the Enemies To Lovers Series

This is a Stand Alone book in the Enemies To Lovers Series. Each book in the series is about a different couple. To get the full experience of their friendship I'd recommend that you start with Heartless.

I’m busy with my rounds and checking on Marcus while Sebastian is giving him a sponge bath.
I hear a slap and tear my eyes away from the monitors to see what they’re up to.
Marcus is covered from the waist down, and Sebastian keeps trying to push the material lower so he can wash Marcus.
“Stop it,” Marcus growls as he pushes Sebastian’s hand away again.
Sebastian shoves his hands into his sides and glares down at Marcus with a raised eyebrow.
“Darling, if you have a problem with me washing your ding-dong, I can always let Leigh do it.”
Marcus opens his mouth and closes it again a few times, clearly at a loss for words.
“I don’t mind,” I say, just to tease Marcus.
“Hell no, woman! You want Jaxson to kill me? I just made it through one life-threatening event.”
“What’s it gonna be, babe? Are you gonna keep still or are you taking your chances with Jaxson not finding out you made his woman touch your ding-dong?”
“I can do it myself,” Marcus wines.
Sebastian starts to laugh and holds the sponge out to him.
“Fine. Let’s see you do it.”
Marcus freezes, and after a few minutes, he glares at Sebastian.
“You want it to rot and fall off?” Sebastian adds.
“Fuck, you’re worse than a woman,” he snaps.
“Thank you, babe,” Sebastian exclaims. “I’ll take it as a compliment coming from you because you’re being a real dick.”
“Just fucking get it over with.” He hisses while shutting his eyes.
I watch as Sebastian keeps it professional and quick, and moves on to wash Marcus’ legs.
The door opens, and Rhett walks in.
“Hey, bro,” he says, then he looks up, and he freezes. His eyebrows shoot into his hairline. “Dafuug?”
I suck both my lips into my mouth to keep from laughing out loud.
“It’s not what it looks like,” Marcus defends as he tries to move his leg out of Sebastian’s reach.
“I’ve heard that one before,” Sebastian mumbles.
Rhett tilts his head, and when it’s clear that he can’t figure out what he’s seeing, he points to the door.
“I’ll… I’ll come back later.”
“Rhett,” I cry as I start to laugh. I bend over and place my hands on my knees to keep myself up. “It’s just a sponge bath.”
Rhett’s eyes grow huge. “You give those here?”
Sebastian rolls his eyes. “Not the kinky kind you’re obviously well acquainted with. I swear, the postal address for that dirty mind of yours is smack bang in the middle of the gutter. Instead of standing there like a lost fart, come hold him still so I can finish. I still have other patients to see to. Some of them happen to appreciate my sponge baths.”
“Damn, woman,” Rhett whispers as he carefully moves closer to the bed. “Is it that time of the month?”
“Don’t you go and bring the bitch out in me,” Sebastian warns while wiggling a finger in front of Rhett’s face.
I bury my face in my hands and laugh until tears drip from my fingers.
I wish I could’ve recorded it.

My Thoughts:

I'm really liking this series by Michelle Horst, but I have to say, for a group of friends who dubbed themselves "the Screw Crew" they are each proving to have a heart of gold underneath the playboy, I-don't-give-a-crap exteriors. Jax is no exception. If anything, he's proving to be the most kind-hearted of the crew. But he has every reason to be a total a-hole, with his upbringing. His mother turned out to be a winner, so it's no surprise why he's so cautious about who he allows close to him. Leigh is perfect for him - and he knows it. That's why he spends most of the book trying to win her back. But the circumstances under which he tries... damn, they're hard. Good thing there's a little something to lighten the way and that something's name is Sebastian. I hate to say it because I love Jax, but Sebastian has a way of stealing the show - he is one of my favorite secondary characters of all time; I laughed until I cried when he was on the page. He just made this book so much more and it wouldn't be the same without him. Do yourself a favor - read this book! You won't be sorry you did.
