Excerpt:

The final notes of Jonathan’s song fade out as he stares at me, his face lit up from the inside, like a kid on Christmas morning who’s gotten everything on his list.   

His song was beautiful the first time that he played it, about a love lost and found, full of nostalgia and longing.  But with the changes?  It’s so much more now.

He sets his guitar down and stands, leaning over me, brushing against my shoulder.  Tapping at the paper on the piano’s music stand, he says, “Okay, let’s write this down so it’s all there.”  He hums through the bridge again, and when he gets to the first part he changed, he looks around. 

Handing him the pencil, I hold my breath at the quick smile he flashes my way.  I think about moving, getting off the bench and out of the way, but the way the piano is wedged into the room and where he’s standing, I’m pretty much trapped.  

And really, I like being this close to him.  I’m enjoying the brush of his side against my shoulder, his arm against mine as he reaches past me to hold the paper still while he erases the notes I drew and draws in the new ones, trying to copy my style of thick slanted lines for note heads.  He scribbles in the names of the chords underneath, then stares at the page for a moment, like he’s soaking it all in.

That smile is on his face again when he turns to look at me.  He’s so happy.  His eyes examine mine, skate over my face, and settle on my lips before dragging back up to my eyes again.  

And he’s right there.  So close that if I lean toward him just an inch or two, our lips would meet.  I’ve wondered what it would feel like to kiss him since the night of the recital.

Without really thinking about it, I give in to the temptation, leaning in those scant inches.  I see his face turn serious in the second before our lips meet, and I close my eyes to savor his soft, full lips on mine.

He kisses me back.  His lips press against mine, but are gone all too soon.  He pulls back, looking at me, that same serious expression on his face, but it doesn’t tell me anything.

Then his hand slides through my hair, cradling the back of my head, and he kisses me again, his other arm going around my waist.  Almost before I can register what’s happening, he’s urged me off the tiny piano bench and onto his bed, with me on my back and him off to the side, his one hand still under my head, while the other caresses my side, down over my hip to my thigh, and back up again.

His smile grew bigger. “You seem a little nervous.”

She chuckled. “Yeah, a little.” She waved a hand around. “I’m just not sure what to expect here. What this is. What you want, exactly.”

His fingers flexed on her hips again. “Just you. Just this. Us. Another chance.” His voice dropped lower. “I missed you.”

Hannah’s breath stopped in her throat at that declaration. At least Matt didn’t mince words. That hadn’t changed. He’d always been direct with her, especially about the fact that he wanted her, from the very beginning. But she pulled away and turned toward the couch, shaking her head. “You missed me, huh? Really?”

She turned back to him, arms crossed over her chest and eyes narrowed. The coffee table stood between them now, providing a needed barrier. His hands on her body and his lips on her skin short-circuited her brain. And that statement from the guy who’d just left her hanging was ridiculous.

He stuffed his hands into his pockets, his face serious. “Yeah. I did.”

She tilted her head, one eyebrow creeping up her forehead. “Since when? Yesterday? Friday? Or before?”

At least he had the grace to look sheepish at the last question. One hand came up to rub the back of his neck, and he dropped his gaze for a moment before looking her in the eyes again. “Look, I’m sorry about what happened before. About the way things ended.”

Hannah snorted. “Ended? You mean the way you left me hanging?”

He nodded. “Yeah, it was a dick move. I’m sorry. Really, I am. I was young and stupid, and I didn’t realize what I was giving up when I let you go like that.”

“You didn’t let me go, Matt. You ghosted me. At least if you’d had the balls to end things I would’ve had some closure.”

He nodded again, his mouth twisted in a grimace, his blue eyes pained. “I know. Believe me, I’ve regretted it since I realized you’d stopped emailing me me, and I didn’t know what to do about it or how to make it up to you, especially with you still in high school three hours away and planning on going to college on the other side of the state. I figured it was better for both of us to just let it go. It was shitty of me to treat you that way and not have the balls to have a hard conversation, and for that I’m so sorry.” He took a step around the coffee table so he could get close to her, but she moved away and held up a hand. “Please, Hannah. I am sorry. Do you want me to beg?”

A throat clearing draws my thoughts back to the present and my attention away from the window. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome stands at the end of my table.  He inclines his head toward the chair across from me, his eyes still studying me intently.  “Is this seat taken?”

I shake my head, mute, goosebumps skittering over my skin at the sound of his voice, and my diaphragm paralyzed again.  His lips curve even more, more of a smirk than a smile. He folds himself so that he sits across from me, his glass of red wine on the table in front of him.  

I take a drink of my own wine, needing something to do and a way to clear the blockage that has formed in my throat.  After a couple of swallows I think maybe I can get some words out.  “I didn't invite you to take it.”  I lift an eyebrow, hoping to come across as coy and flirty, and take another sip from my glass.  My voice rasps the words out, an indication of his effect on me, but I don't sound like I'm choking, so that's good.  God, what is wrong with me?  Why am I reacting like this?  I'd chalk it up to being tired from the drive, but I stayed with Brian and Jenna for a couple of days before coming down here, and it's only a few hours from their house to Walla Walla.  

He laughs, throwing back his head like I just told a great joke.  My other eyebrow raises to join the first.  What the hell?

He calms down and leans his forearms on the the table, his fingers spinning his glass by the stem.  “No, I suppose you didn't.  Usually when a woman doesn't want a man to join her, she says the seat is taken even if it isn't.  At least in my experience.”  

“You get rejected a lot?”

He laughs again, though not as much as before.  “Not especially, no.”

I nod.  Not surprising.  With his smooth confidence, it’s hard to deny him what he wants. “You could've wanted the chair for another table, though.  In which case it would be rude of me to say it's taken when it clearly isn't and deprive you of a needed chair.”

He gives a pointed glance around the nearly empty space. When his gaze returns to me, he raises an eyebrow and takes a drink of his wine.

“Fine.  Point taken.”

“Would you like me to leave you alone?”  The smile has fallen from his face, his gaze still intent, but sincere.  

I drop my eyes to consider that for a moment, toying with my glass.  Do I want him to leave me alone? The way he flusters me with just his presence alone makes me think I should send him packing, my sense of self-preservation strong.  The same smooth confidence that makes him hard to deny has my senses on high alert. Pierce was smooth and confident at first, too. After his betrayal, I haven't been interested in guys or relationships.  But something about this man makes me want to see where tonight could go.  There's no harm in sharing a table with an attractive man while we each drink some wine, is there?  What's the worst that could happen?

Chris held the restaurant door open for Megan. It was after two on a Sunday and the usual lunch crowd had cleared, so they got a table right away. He'd opted for Fire, the fancy pizza place. He didn't know what was expected for a date on a Sunday afternoon. Megan was in jeans and he wore shorts, so a really upscale place didn't seem like a good choice. He'd been here a couple of times and the food was good.

Once they’d ordered their pizza and the waitress had gone, Chris fidgeted a little, tapping his fingers on the table.

Megan studied him over the top of her glass. “Nervous?”

He stopped his hands through sheer force of will. “Nope. Why?” He managed to keep his voice casual. Good.

A grin spread across Megan's face. “You're bouncing your leg like crazy.”

Shit. He stopped that too. “I don't know what you're talking about.” That casual tone he'd managed before? Nope, gone now. He was such a bad liar sometimes. Megan just laughed at him and he smiled. “Fine. I don't take girls out very often.”

“How often is not very often?” Megan's tone was dry, and her lips twitched with suppressed laughter.  He appreciated that she was trying not to laugh in his face, even though part of him was kind of annoyed that she found it so amusing that he was flustered. He didn't get flustered with girls, dammit. But he didn't date girls either.

He screwed up his face like he was deep in thought. “Hmm. About never.”

Megan lost her fight with her laughter and let it out. She didn't hold back when she laughed—no simpering giggles like so many girls used when they flirted with him.

Her laughter died down and she studied him again, the humor now gone from her face. “So, this is a date.”

He nodded and took a drink of his soda, wondering where she was going with this. Hadn't they established this morning that this was a date?

“Does that mean we're dating?”

He shrugged. “What would that mean, exactly?”

“Don't worry, you don't have to take me out to eat all the time or anything.” She flashed him a big grin and he smiled back. “But no fucking anyone else while we're together. If you want to end it, have the balls to end it with me before you hook up with another chick.”

It was his turn to study her face. The waitress showed up then with their food. What impeccable timing. He waited for her to leave before he returned his attention to Megan. “Sounds fair. And it goes both ways.”

“Of course.” She maintained eye contact, her brown eyes holding his like she was trying to see inside him without giving anything away. Finally she flashed her smile again and got a slice of pizza.

Their conversation relaxed after that. She seemed satisfied with his answers about their relationship, such as it was. Relationship. That was a loaded word. Their … shit. He couldn't come up with anything better than relationship. In any case, he was happy she didn’t push for more than he was able to give. Exclusivity didn't seem like too big of a deal. Especially since he hadn't wanted anyone else since he'd met her.

She started struggling again. With the way he held her, her breasts were pushed against his chest and they rubbed back and forth with her movements. He could feel his body start to react. "Matt told me to back off and leave you alone, so I did." He spit out the words through gritted teeth.

 Megan stopped struggling and looked up at him, eyes wide. "Why would he do that?" He thrust his now hard cock against her belly.

"You really don't know the answer to that question?"

 Megan's eyes grew even wider, and he couldn't be sure in the dim light, but he thought her cheeks went a little pink. Who knew Megan could be made to blush? Her tongue darted out to wet her lips, and it was all Chris could do not to groan. "Why would …? What …? I don't understand."

 In answer to her inarticulate questions, Chris pulled her closer and crushed his mouth to hers. She stiffened at first, but relaxed into him, opening for him when he began questing with his tongue. Her lips were soft, and he could taste the beer from the party. He wondered a little how much she'd had. She didn't seem drunk. When he pulled back, she was staring up at him, looking a little dazed. He released her, letting her step back. She brought a hand to her mouth, never taking her eyes from his. Her pupils were dilated, her eyes hooded. He felt smug that he'd managed to take her from pissed off to aroused with one kiss. Or maybe, like him, she'd already been aroused from their fighting. He reached for her free hand. "Let's get out of here."
