EXCERPT:
“Next question: who’s the asshole following me around, telling you what I’m up to when we’re not together?”

She lifts her nose in the air and walks past me.

“Goddammit, this shit’s important,” I snap as she hurries to the door and opens it.

She slips out into the foyer, and I slow the fuck down because, as I just lit into her about showing a united front, I need to do the same, no matter how fucking hard it is.

I catch up to her and grab her paw. She looks at me.

“I wasn’t done with you in there.”

She leans against me, grabs the back of my head, and pulls it down to whisper in my ear, “You.”

I pull back and lock eyes with her. “The asshole following me around is me?”

When I feel her slide her paw into my jeans pocket, I smile for show and ask, “What the fuck are you doing?”

She laughs and says loud enough for those around us to hear, “Oh, my bad, is that not your phone?”

I play along and tell her, “A little to the left.”

She pulls my phone out, turns, and leans against me. “Take a selfie with me?”

I whisper in her ear, “You’re fucking pushing it a bit here, huh?”

“Smile, JT.”

I look up, and she takes a picture. Then she opens up the messenger app and sends it to herself before turning and putting the phone back in my pocket, making a big damn show of it, too. All I can do is stand here, telling my cock not to feed into her bullshit.

I wrap my arm around her waist and pull her tightly against me, hoping to still her little fucking paw. “A little clarification and a little less cock teasing.”

She pulls her paw out of my pocket and reaches up, placing both paws on my neck, and begins running them up and down my neck. “You shared your location with me.”

“The hell I—” I stop and narrow my eyes at her at the realization that she just opened my phone without asking for my password.

“United front, JT. Smile in place and present.” She pops a quick kiss to my cheek then turns and walks away.

I pull my phone out and check my settings. Along with my entire crew, I’m now sharing my location with her.

When I look up at her, she looks over her shoulder, smirking at me.

Well played, Queenie, well played.

Blurb:
When offered the keys to the kingdom, I all but pissed on the throne.
I didn’t need the figurative crown to become the king, and I sure as hell didn’t want anything more to do with the little queen.
When the power started to shift and lives were being torn apart, justice needed to be served.
Who better to serve it up … than me?

Excerpt:
“Pfft, you don’t scare me one bit. My father is more intimidating than you. Now get me some damn towels, and then we’ll be out of your way.”

His Persian blue eyes are now wild and, for some reason, it just riles me up more.

I hear Brisa behind me, now sounding a bit panicked. “She’s drunk. She hardly ever drinks, and—”

A loud clapping distracts me, and I look to where the sound is coming from.

Harrison Reeves is smirking, slowly clapping. “Bravo.”

“Reeves,” Tobias sneers.

“She’s a little actress, Eastman. It’s in my blood to applaud when I see a worthy performance.”

“This isn’t a performance, Reeves,” I snap.

“Oh, Miss Steel, you’re like a little chihuahua with a pit bull attitude—feisty. I really like feisty.”

“Thanks,” I huff. “Now, how about you get me some damn towels and let us be on our merry way?”

I hear the door shut and look around. They left us here … with them.

“Truth,” Brisa whispers as she steps to my side.

“Easton, get the girl some towels”—Harrison smiles menacingly then looks away from me—“before she pisses herself or starts crying.”

“As if,” I huff.

I hear a door slam and have to stop myself from jumping.

Harrison looks back at me, smiling a little playfully now. A little too playfully.

“What is your aversion to being nice?”

He leans in, and I stay standing tall. Well, as tall as I can. Then he whispers, “You weren’t on the guest list. And neither was your cousin. Easton doesn’t appreciate rule breakers. Me, on the other hand, find it fascinating.”

“My bad we didn’t RSVP. We weren’t even going to come. It was a last-minute decision. It’s not Baker or Abhi’s fault.”

“I’m very glad you”—he pauses—“came.”

Blurb:
I traded my plaid skirt for a navy blazer, my religion for a red Solo cup, and finally my Bible for a bong, just to fit in.
He helped me jeté from outcast to the "it girl."
In becoming this new, improved version of myself, my truths became laced with lies.
I thought he was my savior, but it turns out that he was really the devil in designer.

EXCERPT:
“You okay?” Truth asks as she paddles toward me, away from where they all ditched Brand after what I can guess was a ten-minute half-assed tutorial.

“They just left him?” I ask, trying my best to mask my annoyance.

“They all learned far too early from Uncle Jase and Abe to actually know how to do that. And let’s be honest, they have zero patience. Plus, they’re not teachers.” She sits up on her board, straddling it like I am mine, as I wait for my next wave. “Why don’t you offer to teach him?”

It’s not like I hadn’t considered doing just that, and as chill as Dad has been since he realized that “where there’s a will, there’s a way” after Bella and Tags got together, I’m not throwing caution to the wind and chancing … tonight being foiled.

“Why don’t you?” I retort.

Truth, being … Truth, shrugs as she pops two fingers in her mouth and whistles loudly. Brand looks toward us, and she waves him over. He lifts his chin, lies on his board, and starts to paddle toward us.

Hot damn, that cowboy can even ride a board and look amazing doing so.

Truth giggles, and I look at her. “What?”

“Could have just asked for a wing girl, Kiki.” She winks. “I got you.”

“That’s not what—”

“What’s my name?” she interrupts.

I roll my eyes and shake my head.

“What’s my name?” She pretends to crack her knuckles as she rolls her neck, faking badass.

I cave, “Truth.”

“Then don’t give me anything but.” She winks.

I look away from her and toward Brand. With each stroke of his arms, I watch, mesmerized by the way his muscles work together. Heat resonates through my body at a ridiculous rate as I think about how his hands took hold of my face, tilted my head back, licked his lips, and then pressed them against mine. The closer he gets to me, the more my core burns.

When his eyes connect with mine, the smile in them falters, and he swallows hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing, and that seems to turn me on even further.

Truth kicks me under the water, and I turn in the opposite direction, not wanting her to see my face, as I’m sure it’s flushed.

As luck would have it, I see a bomb coming in.

“That’s mine,” I say as I quickly maneuver my body on my board and charge the wave. I paddle faster as the wave builds higher and higher.

“No fucking way!” I hear Max yell from a distance as I pop up and the wave begins to barrel.

“You got this, Katy girl.” I hear my dad’s voice and his loud laugh as I enter the tube.

I almost feel bad for Max, I think as walls of water form around me. This is one of those moments every surfer lives for.

Now totally surrounded by water, I hear Dad’s voice in my head as clear as if he were standing right beside me, “Plant your feet, crouch down, center your body weight, keep your shoulders square, your eyes on the exit, just ride it out.”

Those words were always for Max, because this was never my thing, but my God how beautiful is this moment.

So beautiful.
My heart is beating rapidly, but there is a calm hold to its hurried pace. I reach out, steadying myself as rolling water pushes me through.

The ultimate goal, of course, is coming out at the end of the tube, feet still planted, but at this moment, I really don’t care if I do or not. This could be a once in a lifetime happening, and if it is, that’s fine with me.

Nearing the end, I crouch lower and lower as the space becomes smaller and smaller. When I emerge out of the end, I hear them all cheering as I stand on my board. Smiling to myself, I simply hold up my hand, pinky and thumb extended, and give it a slight shake—shaka.

Dad throws his hands in the air, laughing as he claps, while I glide easily toward shore.

I look out of the corner of my eye at Brand and catch him with a soft smile on his full lips as he shakes his head very slowly back and forth. Then he raises his hand and gives me a very discreet shaka.

Blurb:
He can sing, dance, and owns whatever stage he’s "performing" on.
His looks make him a triple threat.
And he’s gone viral.
He is the Country Music Artist of the Year.
Which means that face, those eyes, that hair, that body, and his voice are every-freaking-where.
He’s America’s newest country sensation, and he can do no wrong.

Except, he did.
He totally did.
And he did it to me.

Blurb:
After a devastating accident crushed my dreams, I ended up back in my hometown teaching kindergarten. I was trying to make the best of it. That is, until the world I had to leave behind, showed up in my classroom in the form of a five-year-old little girl. Her father living the exact life I almost had.

Adam Jacobson is known as the bad boy of rock. While he and his band tour the world, they leave a trail of mayhem. What no one knows is behind the music is a caring, straightedge man with a secret — a daughter who the world is about to discover.

When they move to my small town, their secret is blown. He needs my help to keep her out of the media, and with each exchange we grow closer. Only problem is I need to stay away from the memories he ignites, and the temptations he brings my way.

Secrets I’ve kept and thoughts of that fatal night come crashing back into my life. I have to wonder if it was more than fate that brought his little girl into my classroom.

EXCERPT:
“Thank you for going with us today,” I say after getting settled on the freeway, heading back home after having dinner together.

Cailin didn’t even make it this far before passing out.

I sneak a quick glance at Sarah and feel a pain in my chest when I meet her eyes. There’s something about her that makes my heart pound for seemingly no reason at all.

“I had so much fun. I’ve never been with just one child who’s old enough to walk on their own and actually be interested in the animals. I brought my niece a few years ago, but she was a little too young. It’s fun to be able to relax more and enjoy the animals without stressing over where everyone is or if they are taken care of.”

“Do you enjoy teaching?”

She lets out an uneasy breath, and I turn to see her expression. She’s staring out the window like she’s thinking. I touch her hand. I can feel that whatever she is thinking isn’t good. I felt it last time we had this conversation too. There’s something she’s not letting me in on.

When our fingers first meet, she flinches ever so slightly. When she doesn’t turn, I grip her harder, opening her palm and entangling my fingers with hers.

I feel the tension slowly leave her body as I run my thumb over hers.

Finally, she speaks, “It’s not like I don’t like teaching. I love it actually. It just wasn’t my first choice.”

I decide not to push her and ask what that first choice was. Obviously, it’s something she still struggles with, and who am I to bring up sore subjects from the past?

We drive in silence, hands intertwined. Like a Nightmare by Deadset Society comes on the radio, and I turn it up slightly, using the control on the steering wheel.

Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Sarah singing. “You know this song?”

“Yeah. I used to listen to My Darkest Days, so I followed them when they started the new band after Matt Walst left.”

I’m stunned to silence. I expect people to know band names and even song titles, but I don’t know many people who care enough to actually know the intricacies of band members and following those members when bands breaks up, only to create new ones.

I try to keep my eyes on the road as I also stare at her in shock.

She drops her shoulder, giving me a deadpan expression. “Why are you so surprised I know that?” My eyebrows rise, and a genuine, deep belly laugh escapes her sexy lips. “I’m not everything you see.”

A grin spreads across my face. “I can tell, and believe me, it makes me want to see more.”

Her cheeks flush, and I squeeze her hand tighter.

As we get off the freeway, Cailin wakes up, yawning as she asks, “Are we home yet?”

“Almost,” I say. “We have to take Sarah home first.”

“How come she can’t just stay with us? Have a sleepover?” Cailin whines as I hear Sarah choke on the water she was drinking.

I wink in her direction while responding. “Maybe another time, but not tonight.”

Sarah covers her mouth as she coughs harder.

When I pull into her complex, she says goodbye to Cailin as I open the door. “Stay right here, okay, sweetheart? I’m just going to make sure Sarah makes it up to her apartment.” I put on a song Cailin likes and close the door before rushing to Sarah’s side.

Sarah drops her water bottle when she sees me appear on the opposite side of the truck. After leaning down to pick it up, she fidgets with her hair, making sure it’s smooth and in place.

“You don’t have to walk me up. I’ll be fine,” she says, looking everywhere but at me.

I reach for her fingers, lacing them with mine. “I want to.”

Her eyes meet mine, and I nod my head toward her door.

“Thank you again for inviting me,” she says as we stroll in the direction of her place.

“We’ll have to plan something again soon.”

Her lips tug up to a smile. “I’d like that.”

We reach her door, and she takes out her keys, unlocking it but not pushing it open. Instead, she pauses and glances up at me, waiting for what I’m going to say.

I step closer, so our bodies are inches apart. “I’m not going to rush this.”

Her eyes widen, but she doesn’t say anything.

“I’ve been with girls I never wanted, but I’ve never been with anyone I actually wanted a future with, especially this bad. I don’t want to screw this up. I’m going to kiss you though.”

I run my fingers across the nape of her neck. Her pulse is thumping out of control. Mine feels the same way.

I slowly lean in. “Is that okay with you?”

Her lids close as she nods ever so slightly. Her scent is the first thing I notice as I take her in—cherries, vanilla, and so fucking mine.

Our mouths brush against each other as I hold her in place. Her lips parting slightly, I lick them, seeing if she’ll invite me in. When she does, I have to hold my breath and make myself not take more than she’s willing to give me right now as our first kiss.

I wasn’t kidding. I want to take this slow. I want to do this right.

It takes everything I have to pull back as I place my forehead to hers. “Slowly,” I whisper more to myself than anything else.

She nods, and I can’t help myself when I lean in again, entangling my tongue with hers and pushing her against the wall, wanting just a little more.

I pause our kiss, keeping her pressed to my body as I breathe her in one more time.

When I step back, everything I’m feeling reflects back at me, written all over her face. I take my thumb and wipe her bottom lip, needing one last touch from her.

“I’ll see you soon,” I say as I step back.

She waves goodbye as she picks up everything that she was holding that’s now on the floor. I try not to laugh that she dropped them, knowing, with a kiss like that, I might have done the same thing if something were in my hand.

Minaldi Legacy-Kissing behind fountain

    EXCERPT:
Prologue

Luca is gone.

I know it before I open my eyes. The weight of his body next to me is absent, the scent of him gone from the air. I sigh, reluctant to begin this day because I know what it holds for me. I know that if Luca is truly gone, I will spend every hour frantically searching for him.

Gazing around, I find my large suite empty. Everything is neat and tidy and exactly in place. Each lavish piece of furniture is polished with lemon oil, each extravagant painting on the wall carefully dusted. Each expensive vase, each crystal lamp, each woven rug is perfectly aligned and exactly how I left it. Something is different, though, somehow changed in this room that I fell asleep in last night.

My sleepy eyes do another quick sweep, and this time I notice the balcony doors standing wide open while the bright morning sun streams onto the mahogany floor and the white sheer curtains on either side flutter in the sea breeze.

This is the difference and it slams into me like a concrete wall. I didn’t fall asleep with those doors open. I would never do that now, not since I know what dangers lurk in the world, the darkness that can find me. Immediately after I notice this inconsistency, I also see that across the room, my bedroom door is tightly closed and the bolt is still slid firmly in place.

Just as I left it last night.

My heart stutters as I realize what this means.

While I slept, Luca must have climbed from my balcony ledge to escape. But the drop is well over thirty feet and there are sharp rocks at the base of the house. There are gardens directly behind, but beyond that, there is a cliff with a hundred foot drop to the sea below.

I leap naked from bed and rush to the balcony’s edge. My bare breasts press against the cold railing as I peer down at both the gardens and what I can see of the pristine sand beyond that. Luca is not lying broken and bleeding there, so I try to still my racing heart. I search the beaches and craggy landscape on both sides of my periphery and I still do not see him.

 He somehow survived the fall.

A hundred different things run through my mind, but the one that stands out in the forefront is the image, the possibility, that he managed to drag himself, broken and bleeding, to a different location, somewhere where he is even now waiting for me to help him.

 Because I promised.

I promised him that I would help him, that I would keep him from the darkness that plagues him, that I would heal him.

  That I would save him.

I swallow hard and as I do, I realize that my throat is tender from Luca’s hands last night. I know that if I look into a mirror, there will be a bruise in the perfect formation of his long fingers around my neck.

As I softly touch it, I remember his face from the night before. It was shadowed in the moonlight and like always, he was beautiful. Luca is handsome in a very classic and beautiful way, dark hair and cut cheekbones. His bangs are long and almost hide his magnificent dark eyes until he shakes his hair away. And when he does, the sadness that dwells there is apparent to anyone who knows him.

But last night, I didn’t need to look into his eyes to see that his darkness had returned. I knew it from the moment he stepped into my room.

I can always see it. It changes everything about him, even the way he walks and moves. The way he stands. The way he speaks. The way he feels.

He is an entirely different person when the darkness comes.

These are the moments that he dreads with every breath when he is himself; the moments when he is no longer Luca.

In these moments, he is filled with thoughts that are no longer his own.

He cannot help it, he cannot control it, he cannot stop it.

But I promised him that I would.

 And I have failed him.

I scramble to my wardrobe and pull on clothing, choosing a shirt with a collar, hoping to somewhat hide the bruise on my neck. The only other people here at Chessarae are servants, except for Luca’s mother in her lonely wing. But she is locked in so she never comes into the main part of the house. No one will see me but the staff. And they are used to seeing strange things.

I rush through the house, through the extravagant corridors and over the marble floors, the rich and polished surroundings that I would never have dreamed I would find myself in. I don’t notice it now though. It has faded into an insignificant corner of my mind. All that matters now is Luca.

I make my way out the back of the house, through the gardens, through the English maze that is perfectly manicured and challenging to maneuver. I manage it with ease, however. I memorized its twists and turns on a happier day.

The weather is stormy today and the normally cheerful and bright Maltese sky is gray and thunderous. I can feel the electricity in the air, snapping the ends of my long hair with static. This day looks as foreboding as I feel, which I hope is not a sign.

I search through the maze. I search the beaches as my feet sink into the cool sand. I search the gardens with their exotic and sweet-smelling blooms and then I search the garage. His car, a shiny black Jaguar, is still in its slot and its hood is cool to the touch. Luca has not driven it today. I search the front lawns and the back. And just when I begin to panic, to fear that he has not returned to Chessarae after all, I search the stables.

As I walk through the heavy wooden doors, the smells of the horses and the hay and the saddle-soap and leather assail my nose and I breathe them in. I’ve always loved this place. It is peaceful here. And I suddenly know, because I can feel it, that Luca is here.

I walk quietly down the main corridor, staring into each stall as I pass.

And finally, finally, when I come to the very last stall on the left, Luca is there and my breath hitches in my chest, freezing on my lips.

Luca is slumped on the ground, in the corner, his expression desolate. He is beautiful even here, even in this condition, and I cannot help but stare down at him as tears fill my eyes.

He is dirty and his clothing is torn. There are smears of blood on his shirt, dried now to a rusty dark brown. I swallow hard, trying not to imagine where the blood has come from.

Luca’s face is tortured as he stares up at me, his head in his hands. There is blood on his fingers.

 “It happened again.”

His words are low and husky and rough, yet elegant at the same time. He is always refined, always perfect, always Luca.

His self-loathe is apparent and it breaks my heart.

I nod mutely because there are no words for this moment. I bend to help him to his feet. At 6’3”, he towers above me. He is slender and strong and masculine. He is lithe and powerful, beautiful and graceful.

And sometimes, on his very darkest days, he is a depraved killer.

But I have gotten ahead of myself.

I should begin at the beginning.

If I don’t, you will never understand.

Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
