He rolls his eyes. “We’re stopping, sugar, whether you like it or not.”
I purse my lips in annoyance. “Don’t call me that.”
I’m not fucking sweet, and he knows it.
With a smile that would make all the girls fawn, he looks my way, and says, “What’s that, pumpkin?”
I cringe. “Pumpkin?”
Anything but that. Anything. I’d settle for bitch at this point as long as he doesn’t call me pumpkin. What is this, the fifties? God, this makes me wanna ram my head into the dashboard.
“Pie?” He nods his head, and I don’t get where he’s going at all.
“What do you want from me?” I ask with a raised voice.
A dark, delish laugh rolls off his tongue, one that makes me want to punch him in the throat.
“Nothing right now, cupcake,” he muses, grabbing my cheeks to squeeze them.
I swat him away, but my skin still prickles where he touched me. Goddammit, I don’t wanna feel this way around him. Anyone but him.
Goddamn him and his annoying nicknames.
“Maybe later, when I feel like roughing you up again …” He winks, and it’s one of those that instantly makes your heart flutter. Fuck.
“But for now, I think you could use some of that.” With that devilish smile, he directs my attention toward a billboard hanging high above the diner that says “Darla’s Delicious Pumpkin Pie!” and my mouth begins to water.
So that’s what he meant.
I stare at it for a second before realizing he’s still watching me instead of the billboard, probably trying to gauge my reaction.
“Hungry?” he asks, lifting a brow.
I clear my throat, and say, “No, we don’t have time for that—”
He takes an instant left turn, and if it wasn’t for this seat belt, I would have flown out of my seat. With screeching tires, we come to a stop on the parking lot. My hair is a mess and so is my heart rate. On his face is an even bigger grin.
“I’ll decide what we have time for,” he says with a smug face as he takes the keys from the ignition. “Time for food.”

Excerpt

Suddenly, something touches my shoulder, and I freak out.
I shriek, but my voice is blocked by a hand covering my mouth.
Adrenaline fills my veins, panic bubbling to the surface. I try to spin on my chair, but can’t, because someone’s holding me down firmly. Strong arms with a scent that reminds me of … soot.
“It’s me, don’t scream,” he whispers.
It’s Brandon.
He leans back and I immediately stand up and turn to face him. “Brandon! Jesus.”
“Sorry. Didn’t wanna scare you,” he says, a little too loud.
I close my eyes and let out a sigh. “God, could you’ve been anymore creepy?”
“I could … If I wanted to,” he says, raising one brow, mocking me.
I narrow my eyes, but my body remains rigid. Tense. It’s like my brain has already decided for me that I can’t trust him. At least, not after what happened at the bonfire. “What are you doing here?” I whisper, still upset that he jumped on me like that. And even though he says I shouldn’t be scared, my skin still prickles where he touched me.
“I just wanted to see you, that’s all,” he says with a way too cocky voice.
“Shh …” I say. “Quiet. We’re close to the farmhouse.”
He shrugs. “So?”
“I don’t want my dad to hear us. He’s in there with my brothers.”
“Ahh …” He takes a step towards me. “You’re afraid he’ll find us here … together?”
“Duh. You shouldn’t be here,” I say, leaning back, as if I instinctively know not to let him get close. I don’t know why, but … it feels different. Like I’m playing with fire and I don’t wanna get burned.
When he tries to caress my cheek, I turn my face slightly. He pauses. “Are you … afraid of me?”
Maybe. I don’t know the answer. I feel like I should. What he did was wrong. Horrible.
But I know why he did it.
After all those years of Derek tormenting Brandon, he was bound to explode. But I never expected it to be this uncontrollable, this explosive. This … dangerous.
“Should I be?” I ask, licking my lips.
The half-smile that forms on his face has my heart skipping a beat. Fuck. I shouldn’t. I really shouldn’t. Not when he’s like this … so volatile and aggressive … and sexy.
“I can’t answer that for you,” he says after a while. He places his hands on the workbench, trapping me inside. “I don’t want you to be, though.”
“That’s easy for you to say …” I whisper, looking down at my feet. Jesus. Why am I such a pussy when it comes to him? I should speak up, for fuck’s sake. Stop being a fucking whimpering virgin who can’t handle a little touchy feely.
“Hey …” He tips up my chin with one finger. “I’m not going to hurt you, I promise.”
I nod softly, as if he just asked me whether or not I believe him. I’m not even sure I do. I just know I want to, for my sake … and for his.
“But … what happened at the bonfire …” I mutter.
I don’t know how to begin my sentence or how to end it. Just like I don’t know where we began and where we should end.
Maybe now.
Maybe never.
Shit.
Why do I feel this way around him?
Why is it that when a guy loses control, I want him even more?
Am I that obsessed with bad boys? Jesus, help me.

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Branded by Candace Havens

Branded.png

I have my hands full taking care of my little sister and covering for my uncle as ranch foreman. The last thing I need is a Texas princess like Callie Llewellyn getting up in my business and messing with my head.

All I can think of is getting up close and personal with those curves of hers. And being on the edge of discovery makes our quick-and-dirty encounters twice as hot. And that’s all they are—quick and dirty—there’s nothing deeper going on here.

There’s only one rule to keeping my job and a roof over my sister’s head: stay away from the boss’s granddaughter. But I’m not always great at following the rules.

An hour later, I’d showered. My bones were tired as hell. But my cock was hard.

I texted Callie: Where are you?

Studying. And I’m not talking to you. Stop texting me.

Didn’t blame her for being mad. I’d been a jerk. But this thing with her had only been going on for twenty-four hours, and I was already twisted up. Might be best to let it go. But that wasn’t going to happen.

What are you studying?

Sigh

I snickered.
Come on. I’m sorry. I was an asshole. Why don’t you bring your books, and I’ll help you.

You don’t even know what it is.

I need to see you. We can just study.
She didn’t text back.
So I typed: You’re mad. So rant. I can take it.

WTF is wrong with you? You’re the one who told me you’d had enough. Then you kissed the shit out of me and took a phone call. And I told you I’m BUSY.

You wanted what I gave you. We’re not doing this on the phone. 30 mins. Bring your books and laptop.

Go F yourself.

I laughed out loud. Maybe it was a little sick, but I liked when she was all red up.

28 mins.

I shoved my phone in my pocket and took off for my uncle’s house. My sister was at her first slumber party. She’d become friends with one of the girls she’d met while helping Mrs. Llewellyn with charity work. They talked on the phone constantly. Her mother was nice, as was her father. The girl had spent the night at our house two nights ago. She hadn’t balked at the simple three-bedroom ranch house. They’d had fun and I hadn’t seen Addy that happy in a long time.

I’d talked to the parents again when they’d picked up her friend. Then before I let her go to the party tonight, I’d made Ads pinky-swear there would be no boys involved. And that she’d text me every two hours to check in.

I still hadn’t heard anything from Callie. So I sent her another text: Meet me at the ranch house. Please. See, I can be nice. Now get your ass over here.

The princess was about to go to a whole new school. And I couldn’t wait to play teacher.
